Cataracts

How is Cataract Surgery done?

The most modern method of surgery is by phacoemulsification where a 3mm cut is made in the eye and cataract is made into small pieces by ultrasonic waves & washed. Following this a foldable Intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted into the eye through this small cut.

What are the advantages of phacoemulsification over other methods?

It is a small incision, No stitch, No injection (selected cases), early recovery, day care operation.

Is someone required to accompany me on the day of operation? Can I drive back home?

It is not compulsory that a bystander is required, but advisable. Patient himself can drive back home after surgery, but not recommended

I am a diabetic. Can I undergo Cataract Surgery?

Yes, with good control of diabetes and physicians clearance of other Systemic illnesses like High blood pressure, Asthma and heart problems, Phacoemulsification can be safely done.

Can I continue with my previously prescribed medications, before operation?

Yes, all the prescribed medications with few exceptions (like blood thinners) should be continued. Anyway, physician's advice should be sought.

Can I eat before the operation?

Yes, Light breakfast or meals can be taken, as operation does not need the patient to be to put to sleep.

Do I need to undergo any tests before the operation?

Yes, detailed examination of the eye, by the eye doctor, to rule out any other contraindications for operation. Also, Scanning and Keratometry to calculate the required power of the IOL, need to be done. Also, any systemic illness needs to be ruled out by the physician.

What are other precautions I need to take on the day of surgery?

Avoid wearing any makeup on the day of surgery & also for at least 10 days after surgery. Please stop using contact lens before operation. 1 week prior - in case of soft contact lens & 2 weeks prior in case of hard lens.

Will I be put to sleep before Surgery?

No, Phacoemulsification is usually done under Local / Topical medications only. Most patients experience gentle pressure and not pain during operation.

How long does the operation last?

It takes approximately 30-40 minutes for phacoemulsification.

Will I be able to see immediately after the operation?

The vision may be blurred temporarily following operation because of the medications that dilate the pupil & the bright light of the microscope.

Do I need to wear Glasses after surgery?

Usually, No. But, it is required for reading or near work, if opted for single focus lens. Patients who require precise distance vision also, do better with both near and distant vision glass.
