Biometry

Ophthalmic Biometry

Ophthalmic Biometry is performed prior to cataract surgery with Intraocular Lens (IOL) implantation to determine the measurements needed to calculate the correct power of the lenses to be implanted during cataract surgery.

A-scan Ultrasound Ophthalmic Biometry - This method is utilized to measure the axial length of the eye. An ultrasound beam is employed to generate echo patterns of the interior tissues of the eye. The data from these tests are stored in a computer or transferred for immediate use for Intraocular lens power calculations for implantation during cataract surgery.

A Keratometer is a device that allows measurement of the corneal curvature. Keratometry is essential in the fitting of contact lenses, evaluating and following patients with Keratoconus, and in the determination of appropriate intraocular lens implant power for patients undergoing cataract surgery

Using the axial length & Keratometry readings & appropriate formulas, the power of the Intraocular lens to be inserted in the eye is calculated.
